Questions: What is the best way to respond to invalidation?

Thank author of this post/commentI am living with a person who chronically practices what psychologists call "invalidation." Basically, he does not recognize or respect my thoughts or feelings as a valid perception of reality. If I offer my opinion about something, he will find something "wrong" with my point of view or my feelings and "correct" them by telling me what I should think or feel. I am not talking about a simple disagreement here. This person seems to think that his point of view is The Correct Point of View, no matter what the topic, insomuch that I have given up trying to engage in any meaningful conversation with him because I will first have to defend my opinion or feelings, and then I will have to defend myself as an individual person because he will launch subtle (or not-so-subtle) attacks against me, as a person, for not sharing his point of view. I feel as if I cannot express myself around this person at all without risking another personal attack. I feel suppressed and depressed because of it. Yes, I am involved with this person in a relationship. What is the best way to respond to him the next time he invalidates my thoughts and feelings? I am tired of walking on eggshells.

    "Friend"

PEople who usually dismiss other people's thought or ideas usually have superiority complex. I believe it'd help for you to point out some of your friends weaknesses as well. Make him see that even he does commit mistakes. it may create an issue between you and him but if it'll help him broaden his horizon then why not. Hpe this helps.
