It is truly hard to live away from your parents at seventeen. You can live away from them but you don't have to totally apart because information technology now makes it possible for people to keep in touch. You can try Skype or chat or Yahoo Messenger to regularly communicate with your parents. You don't have to do this everyday. Maybe once or twice a week is okay. Alternately, you can send them short messages through your mobile phone.
I think it is fun to actually be independent and live on your own when the right time comes. I would say that living on your own is fun and challenging. You can learn lots of things, experience lots of things and most importantly, you can do whatever you want. And if you are thinking that you are going to miss mom and dad, what is the use of the net?
I understand how hard it is to be living away from parents or kids. Homesickness is a great opponent when you are away from home and loved ones. But, in one way or another it will help you to become more independent and experience the reality of life. Let us just be thankful for the various forms of technology which allow us to keep in touch with our loved ones.
It is only natural to long for your parents especially if you are quite closed to them back when you used to lived with them. I wished you told us the reason why you are away from them in the first place, but I guess there is no need. Thanks to the latest technology, you can always connect with them either through video chat (with webcam) or a simple phone call. If the purpose of being away with them is to help you become a better person then it is worth the separation.
Though I did not leave my parents at such a young age, I did live away from my parents when I went abroad. And at the beginning, it is difficult dealing with homesickness. But as you adjust to the new environment and make new friends, you will feel better about the situation. Also, as the others have said, communicating with family really helps and with the technology available right now, one can have some cheaper options for communication.
