Hi Angela and Harry, Welcome to my discussion board. I am all in favor of having children, I have three and they are a blessing-sometimes. The problem with what you are both advocating is that not everyone can afford to provide for the needs of all the children they could potentially have and are not always able to care for them properly. Children can provide great learning experiences for parents as well as great frustrations. They can be inspirational and they can be destructive to family home life if not parented correctly. So having kids for the sake of having them is not a good idea. How much parental training have you had? How well do you understand the psychology of a child? Raising a child to adulthood is a tremendous responsibility that needs to be taken seriously. I recommend you read the articles on this website regarding parenting and its responsibilities before you start creating your own brood. Not everyone has the temperment nor patience to deal with young children and that can lead to child abuse. If you just want to have sex, that is your choice, but be careful about the lives you bring into the world and be sure you can care for them properly.
Lighten up dude! Having a baby is just about the only thing you can do without requiring permission of the Government first. Did you ever notice how resilent humans are. Raising kids ain't as bad as you think.
Hi Harry, It is a little hard for me to lighten up on the fact that about 896,000 were maltreated or abused in 2002, of these 180,000 were so pysically abused as to require legal intervention. The perpetrators of this child abuse in over 780,000 cases were the child's parents. In 2002, an estimated 1,400 children died due to child abuse and neglect. And just so you know that I know about raising kids, I have three grown children, 17 grown foster children and 5 grandchildren. How many children do you have?
First I'd like to say "touche'" to you, Dr. Doug for your comments regarding children. I have worked with kids who have been sexually abused and have seen the damage done by too many parents caring too much about the CONCEPTION and too little about the ongoing care of a child. I would also like to challenge folks to think of therapy as an investment in their future(s). I have recently traveled to a rather remote island in the Caribbean at substantial cost to the couple contracting my services...however our time together was SO beneficial, they are THRILLED they have invested in both their mental health and their relationship by paying for someone to "walk with them in the darkness and then guide them into the Light." I now have a weekly teleconference and ongoing email conversations...they have grown/are growing by leaps and bounds. They have broken dysfunctional cycles and have begun their lives anew...it's been a truly amazing thing to behold. They are genuinely REINVENTING themselves...and EVERYONE is taking notice! No investment is as good as one that is utterly life changing. While I realize this may sound somewhat self serving, I genuinely just want you all to know that I do what I LOVE and I LOVE what I do because I recognize the potential in people and see a substantial RETURN on what is truly a very minimal investment of time and money. When it comes to our physical health, people will spend thousands on exercise equipment, diet plans, personal trainers. Why then, are we so lackadaisical when it comes to our MENTAL HEALTH? I hate to tell you, folks, but if our MIND goes, it ALL goes! Just something to ponder... Paula
An investment in the future can come in so very many differing ways, most certainly so. It all depends upon what it is that we do with such investments that would make the biggest difference, overall.
