hi, i don't know where to start. i guess there are millions of threads like this.

i've been feeling sad/hopeless for a little over a year now. it started when my boyfriend of three years dumped me two weeks before thanksgiving last year. my world came crashing down on me and i haven't been able to really recover. i know it's lame. for the first time ever, i failed all my classes for the semester soon after. i never failed a class in my life. right now i'm struggling just to graduate. it's the end of my second year at a community college and i'm probably going to be on my third year there. my GPA went from a 3.6 to a 2.0 soon to be C average. what's really a punch in the face is i don't enjoy my major i'm studying but i can't change it since i only need to pass the three classes i'm taking now to get the degree. but as of right now, i'm failing since i mentally checked out of school mode. i have no motivation due to this sense of stuck hopelessness. i only decided to study the particular major because i was stupid and listened to my ex when he told me it was more practical to go after a business degree as opposed to an art degree.

it also doesn't help that i don't get along with my parents. my mother is verbally abusive i guess. she'll call me a loser and she has made the comment in front of my friends on one occasion. not to say that i'm totally innocent. i suppose i do instigate arguments with her, but it hardly justifies her in calling me a loser. she'll say it as i'm leaving the house too. she knows how to push my buttons.

i don't drink nor am i promiscuous or engage in drugs, but i am highly unmotivated. i attend community college full time and work ten hours a week only because i have extreme difficulty in concentrating in something i'm not interested in.

i am not suicidal. i just feel hopeless and angry. what's wrong with me?

im no doctor but im pretty sure what you are dealing with is actually normal. recently one of my really good friends was going through a very similar situation. his depression caused him to lose a lot at one time to say the least. this only lasted for about six months, namely because i wouldnt let it go on anymore. i told him he has more things in life to worry about than dealing with her. i started getting him out more with some of my friends and showing him that life does go on. it took some time but eventually he started to date one of my wifes friends, and soon after that he became more of the guy i used to know. the point of me telling you tis is i think you need to let go of him, make new friends and maybe find some one else to share your time with, nothing serious at first but some one with good qualities that can help give you some thing to look forward to each day, trust me when i say there is a whole world out there just waiting for you to introduce the new you to it. as far as your school goes he was right buisness is more practical for the current economy. but dont let that stand in your way, think of it as dream builder. you dont have too much more to go so get your degree, then use what you get from that to fund your dreams of an art major. i always try to encourage the people around me to never give up on something you really want, so find a way to make life work for you. and never let some ONE in the way. just because they made poor decisions, doesnt mean you have to as well. you sound like a very level headed woman with a lot to offer, so his loss, find some one worth your time who wants to support you in all your dreams. and keep your head up girl, life does get better, you'll be ok dont worry. keep me posted on how things are going, i know you dont know me but all my friends call me dr. phil because i like to help people out when times get tough. i hope things get better for you.

What you are experiencing is normal, you might even be "lucky" to be even studying. What is unfortunate with your situation is that you have a very unsupportive and whiney parents that instead of supporting and understanding your situation she'd rather gives you more burden rather than help. I suggest you view life positively, study hard if indeed you want to pass and get high grades (there are no shortcuts unless you'd like to cheat your way through)

Don't let this thing passed my friend. If possible ask for help from other relatives you are willing to talk freely about the issue to help you talk to your parents. If you have none then dare to speak to a guidance councilor at your school for advise or if you are braver speak to your parents directly about "their" problems. If this goes on then it is not impossible that somewhere along the way you'll loose it all and will become rebellious.

That's considered normal. I also experienced that when a guy special to me has found someone new and just left me hanging. I also feel depressed and angry at that time. I also flunked one subject and can't concentrate in my studies but I managed to carry myself with the help of some books. The incident caused me to have low self-esteem. The good thing is that, from the Fabulous Self-Esteem e-book by Amy Twain, I have build my self-esteem again without asking any help from others which also gave me confidence that I was able to handle it independently
