| diagnosing bipolar I am confused....my daughter is 21. She was a model student and child until jr high. At that time, she presented symptoms of OCD (ironed everything and would not even bend her arms until we were in front of school so she wouldn't wrinkle anything...everything in its place, etc). She also moved away from her popular friends to a group of girls that shunned the goody-goody image and wore more "angry teen" appearances. She finally became suicidal in high school (found out through computer surveillance) and spent 2 weeks in MH hospital. She came out looking brighter about her future. She was diagnosed as ADHD and started on meds, however I am not sure that was a valid diagnosis. One PA actually suggested she may be bipolar, referring to her anger and mood swings. Soon she gradually started climbing down that MH ladder again. At this time, her sister who is 2 yrs younger started high school too. My daughter would drive her to their school every other day and verbally berating and frankly verbally abusing the younger one who was going through her own body image problems. As a result, the younger one became bulimic which didn't manifest itself completely for another year. The older one (L.) went to college a couple years ago and partied so much, she came back after a year. She became angry with me after a particular argument and took a key to my truck. We moved her out into an apt after that and she seemed to be doing well as a massage therapist, living on her own. Recently, however, we took a family vacation. She and her sister were in the same hotel room and L. got drunk at a function. The two sisters started arguing and became incredibly intense, to the point of L throwing things around the room and almost physically hitting the younger one.Her mood was almost manic at dinner that night with nonstop talk. She became angry when we didn't let her have our car after she was drinking. I'm afraid this is going to affect future vacations, IF we ever have any together. She can be sooo sweet to her grandparents and frankly to us most of the time...until she becomes angry. And I hate to mistrust her but I do now. I want her to get help but she makes excuses about the cost and time off work, etc. The two were always friends in their youth until the older one's jr high. Now at their present ages, they hate each other. Please help with a diagnosis and advice. |
