The biting thing

It has gone on for about 20 years. The biting relieves stressful situations, in a sense. It started when I was five, maybe six. I am now twenty six, with an education, and considered respected in most places within society. But, the bruises on my right arm are not becoming. I feel as if it is impossible to stop biting my arm when under stress and I never knew that others struggled with this problem, . Really, it was assumed to be a personality quirk until a friend noticed me doing it. He told me that it is a sign of depression or bipolar disorder. Does anyone have advise on that subject? I researched the issue and found that it is an indication of bipolar disorder. It is obviously unnatural or abnormal. I want to stop the biting. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to do so?
