Questions: Will being diagnosed with bipolar disorder ruin my life?

Thank author of this post/commentI think I an bipolar I have taken numerous screening tests and they all say I am suffering from many of the symptoms if bipolar 1 and my family has a history of that. I am afraid to get help because it will ruin my life! At least I think it will! What if kids at school find out? What kind of 13 year old is daignoses with bipolar 1? And what about my family? They will pity me and that makes me soo mad!!! And if I'm put on medication it will change who I am! I won't be the me I know myself as! It will be so weird and bad. That's my opinion. What's yours? Will being diagnosed with bipolar 1 ruin my life or make it better?

Hi Devin,

I am not a professional, but I'm learning more about bipolar disorder since three members of my family have symptoms. I do not believe that getting help for your symptoms will ruin your life. I don't think that it is even necessary to put a label on your symptoms. If you take medication and it helps, does it make any difference what the illness is called? It takes a lot of courage to get help and it also takes a lot of patience to get the right dosage and if necessary combination of meds. Counseling with someone that you trust and are comfortable with is also important. I don't know your family, but if they are not supportive, find people who are. I can tell you this, my youngest son has taken the route of getting help and my oldest son has not. There is a big difference in how they are able to handle life. The younger is able to channel his creativity, the older is drifting and getting involved in activities that are only going to make his symptoms worse. I think you are very brave to reach out for help! The decisions that you make now will affect the rest of your life and it is your choice to make. I wish you all the best Devin, and hope and pray that you will find the right people to help you.
