I am a 14 year old girl. A few years ago i was an odd child who didn't fit in with the rest of the kids from my school. I had no friends, and I would often cry myself to sleep. About a year later, I got really bad and would overdose on pills and cut my wrists with knives. I got recommended to a doctor and was put on anti-depressants (zoloft). It's been about 2 years now since i've been on them and i'm noticing more and more that I have been having symptoms of mania where I can go from super hyperactive and happy, to deeply depressed and suicidal in a matter of minutes, where as in my younger years, I didn't get overly hyper. I've tried to tell my mom and my psychiatrist that I think i've got symptoms of bipolar disorder, seeing as it does exist in my family, but neither will take my word for it. For some reason, my moods are getting worse now. Is there a chance that I'm Bipolar? How am I supposed to get my mom to believe me?

After 15 years of going thru what you have described i was finally diagnosed bipolar 2 which is bipolar 1 on a lower scale and anti-depressant work for a while and then stop or cause mania with this illness. i recommend you get the book by Jim Phelps, M.D. Maybe if your mom read the book she would understand. This book helped me understand my illness and it even has a section in there about how to talk to your doctor. Or maybe you can talk the doctor into trying you on a mood stabilizer. If all else fails see if you can change doctors.

By the way bipolar 2 is just now starting to be recognized and may not be your problem at all only a doctor can help you.

I wish you the best.

I myself have bipolar disorder and I definetly say that you have it. its not a matter of getting your mom to believe you, you need to tell her you know you have this disorder and you want to go to the dr. and get it taking care of before you harm yourself or someone else. There is no explaining to your doctor either, just tell him your symptoms and Im sure he will give you medicine that will help you.

Bipolar disorder sounds really scary it is even more scary that your mom dosnt believe you. I don't know how I could help you but Iwish you th best of luck.

Why dont you just try going to the docotor on your own and tell him what you said on your post. It is something you need to get taking care of before it gets serious and you do something to harm yourself or someone else. Seek help and if the doctor wont help you, than switch doctors or try going to a counselor.

Dear Kassi,

The next time you feel suicidal, even if you dont think you will go through with it, but you just feel really bad, go in and tell your school guidance counselor. If it can't wait that long, go to the ER. If no one will take you or if no one is home, call 911 and tell them how you feel. If you begin cutting yourself or thinking you'd like to do that, it's time to call 911 right away. It will be alright. Do not wait until the next time you can see your doctor, that is always a big mistake people make.

You are probably being medicated for regular depression when in fact you have bipolar depression. The same thing just happened to my neice. When they moved her Zoloft up to 150mg, she went into full mania and had to go to the hospital for a week. That doesn't have to happen to you.

I have made a spot on my website and posted the letters I've been sending to my niece, who just turned 18, not much older than you, really, to explain everything to.

Please go read Sir Illogical Neurological the Diabolical to understand why you don't fit in, feel bad, cut yourself and cry yourself to sleep.

Also feel very free to email me honey, anytime.

Sincerely, Aunt Karen

What is happening to you is exactly what you describe and is well known. Dr. Ghaemi who is thw worlds leading expert on Bipolar, says that Antidepressants are a NOT TO BE USED AND THAT THEY CAUSE RAPID CYCLING MANIA.

You must get off of the Antidepressant as this is what is causing you to cycle and it is called exactly rapidly cycling just as you say.

Google Ghaemi Rapid Cycling.

essentially the Your antidepressant works as a mood- destabilizer, not a stabilizer

it is producing your mania. Only this year will the FDA force the drug companies to warn of this but it is well known that ANYONE with Bipolar depression should NOT BE ON ANTIDEPRESSANTS

very bad drugs for you

so get off - slowly and under a doctors care and you should be fine

Help for Bipolar Disorder

One of the biggest difficulties with Bipolar disorder is that those suffering from the disorder are often unaware of the severity and disruption caused by their alternating mood states. In the throws of a manic episode, the individual is usually convinced that there is absolutely nothing abnormal about his or her behavior, and may even assert that they have never felt better.

For this reason, it is often family, friends or health care practitioners who notice that there is a serious problem and suggest professional help. Left untreated, the effects of Bipolar disorder can be very disruptive and even fatal.

People in manic states have often taken huge irrational risks that could have serious consequences such as bankruptcy, car accidents, losing a job or unintentionally harming themselves or others.

Try to apply positive thoughts in your life. No need for a medicine or any professional help. It cost you nothing but your willingness to help yourself. If you feel like suicidal again, try to think of a happy thought. In case that you don't know it, our actions and feelings came from our thoughts. So if you feel negative emotionally, that is because yuo are thinking negatively.

Yuo can watch the movie "The Secret". There, you will learn the effects of thoughts to our actions, moods and feelings.
